The ancient Maya of Central America had a special relationship with space and time, with the position of the sun and the moon. These determine the change of seasons, which in turn are important for the natural cycles of planting and harvesting. By studying the movement of the heavenly bodies, they developed as many as 17 calendars, each with its own use for earthly or spiritual purposes. They realized that life was influenced by several natural cycles occurring simultaneously. The Maya show that studying the stars, planets and their influence on life is logical and natural. And that what we do: separate astronomy and astrology, is artificial and hinders us in the search for ourselves.
Let yourself be carried away by the flow of energy that the Maya show us through their calendars. Open up and allow yourself to experience and learn. In this way the Maya wisdom will reconnect you with your own wisdom and the opportunities and possibilities that life offers when you look beyond what you may be accustomed to.
All the different calendars were connected by the Tzolkin calendar, the central axis around which everything revolved. The Maya Tzolkin Calendar tells the story of your life based on your date of birth. It allows you to learn much about your qualities, talents, and how you are energetically supported by the cosmos to grow, create, and be fully yourself.
The Tzolkin calendar shows us that each day has its own energy and that you can surf on this energy. You can use the energy available each day to shape projects, plans, desires and relationships. After all, the Tzolkin is a creation calendar. You can see that just by looking at the 260 day cycle. Converted to our calendar, a 260-day period is nine months: the time from conception to birth, the creation of a human being.
There are two calendars in circulation. The most widely used in Europe is the Dreamspell calendar, a modern version of the traditional Tzolk'in or Chol Q'ij calendar. On this page we assume the Dreamspell count. A more detailed explanation of the different counts, their meaning and role can be found here.
The calendar has a cycle of 260 days. Each day has its own box in the calendar with a Kin number from 1 - 260. You can use the calculator on this website to convert your date of birth in the Gregorian calendar to a Kin number in the Dreamspell calendar. Once you have found your Kin number, you will find the tone and color in the box and to the left of the calendar the corresponding daysign of your birth date.
Every day has its own color. The four colors of the calendar together form the smallest cycle of creation in the calendar: a cycle of four days. A red day is always followed by a white day, then a blue day, then a yellow day, and so on. Each color is associated with a season and a wind direction and has its own meaning
Red - East - Spring - New beginning, birth
White - North - Winter - Distance and refinement
Blue - West - Autumn - Transformation and renewal
Yellow - South - Summer - Blossoming and harvesting
There are five sun signs of each color, each representing its own quality with different aspects: light and shadow sides. Each represents the qualities of its color in its own way. Together they form the whole of the qualities of creation. Each seal is connected to our body: 10 fingers and 10 toes.
A Tzolkin "week" has thirteen days. Each day has its own creation power, which is represented by a 'tone'. The tones are represented according to the Maya counting system. A dot counts as one, a stripe counts as five. So two stripes with a dot above them is tone 11. Together, the thirteen tones represent thirteen steps in the creation process.
The 260 combinations of stamps and tones form 20 series of 13 tones: the paths of creation or wavespels. The wave spell into which you were born I call your life path. Together they form an infinite spiral of creation. Each wavespell is a step in this spiral of creation. A cycle of 260 days is exactly the time it takes to create a human being: from conception to birth.
The black boxes in the calendar are portal days or GAP days (Galactical Activation Portals). The daysign of that day has the same color as the other days in the same row. They are intersections in time when we easily receive information from the cosmos. The portal is wide open those days, so to speak. On these days there is much to feel to which you may not be able to put words directly. If you were born on such a day, then you are extra sensitive and have been preoccupied with major life questions from a young age.
The middle column forms the backbone of the calendar and consists of twenty core days. It is the column that invites us to be present in the here and now. Things from the past that you have not yet completed come back onto your path in this intense column to be completed. If you are born in the middle column, you experience life intensely. You can concentrate well and have little need for outside input.
The middle two days of the middle column together form the heart of the calendar. There lies the connection to the source from which everything comes and returns.
